Custom Alzheimer’s / Dementia Memory Books

Whether your loved one has Alzheimer’s Disease or another type of dementia… caregiving isn’t always easy.

Repeatedly reminding a loved one with dementia of the details of their life can be an arduous and emotionally challenging task, yet an important one. It helps them maintain a sense of identity and self-connection by preserving their personal history. By revisiting memories and life events, it can provide them with a sense of familiarity, comfort, and continuity.

Mom and two adult kids smiling

Hi, I’m Stephanie! I’m the caregiver for my beloved mother Michele, who is 77 and has Alzheimer’s Disease. My mom’s occupational therapist said that my mom really needed a memory book, so I set out to find a company to make it for me. When I couldn’t find one, I decided to make it myself. I realized that without my background in photography, copywriting, and graphic design, the process of creating it would have been a lot more difficult.

Mom before Alzheimer’s

That’s when I got the idea to help other families create their Dementia Memory Books, reducing their stress on this already-stressful journey. When you are a caregiver, or even a support person for someone with dementia, you don’t have a lot of extra time. Figuring out what to include and how to create and print a high-quality memory book is a big task!

Let me help you create a book that is customized just for your beloved family member, using guidelines from therapists and experts in the field of dementia

Triggers memories:

Acts as a visual aid that helps stimulate memory recall with familiar people, places, and events from the past while also evoking emotions, which can help recall more memories. Aids with repetitive questions.

Calms and Refocuses:

Has a unique ability to distract during moments of emotional turbulence and agitation. Flipping through the book can be a mental diversion, drawing attention to cherished memories and away from distressing thoughts or situations.

Reduces Anxiety and Agitation:

As a tangible link to the past, a memory book can help them feel more grounded and secure. It can alleviate distressing emotions by offering a sense of familiarity, continuity, belonging, and identity.

Personalizes care:

Provides valuable insights into the person's life story, interests, and relationships. Helps caregivers provide more empathetic and personalized care. Reminds caregivers of the person's humanity, inspiring them to continue providing the best care possible

Engages and Stimulates:

Looking through photographs, reading personal stories, and discussing past events can help exercise memory, attention, and conversation skills. This cognitive engagement provides valuable mental stimulation, which can support brain health.

Preserves Family History:

Captures and preserves important memories, stories, and experiences, ensuring they are not lost over time. Allows family members to share the person's life journey, pass down family history, and maintain a connection even as dementia progresses.

How does it work?

1. Chat about your loved one

We can chat on the phone or via email about your family’s story, just so I can get a feel for how the memory book should flow.

2. Submit your content

You’ll share with me the content you want in your book, including a questionnaire about your loved one and pictures.

3. Review and edit your design

I’ll create your book design including language and content recommended by dementia experts. When it’s ready, you’ll get to review the design and request up to 2 rounds of changes, if desired.

4. Receive your 12x12 hardcover book

Your finalized memory book will be mailed directly to you. You can also order additional copies at any time.

FAQs

How long does the process take?

It depends on how quickly you get me your questionnaire and photos, but typically the full process takes between 4-6 weeks.

Do we need professional photos?

You do not need professional photos for your memory book. You are welcome to include them, but snapshots and smartphone photos will work just fine.

How many pages are the books?

An average book is roughly 20 pages, but I will be in touch if it seems like yours may be longer.

Do I need to write the words?

Nope, this service includes full copywriting! You just need to fill out a questionnaire about your loved one and I’ll take it from there.

When should I create my book?

Therapists recommend memory books early on in dementia, but it’s never too late! I made my mom’s when she was “mid-stage” Alzheimer’s.
